FOR DELL'S CURRENT DEALS, CLICK HERE TO GO TO OUR DELL PAGE! Find the proper MEMORY for your system. If you have questions about your Dell computer configuration, send me an email. TO SUPPORT THE SITE, CLICK HERE! TIP: Clean your screen - turn off your PC. Use a damp soft cloth. Wipe screen carefully, then buff dry with
another
soft cloth. Then wipe your keyboard and pointer area,
avoiding the pointer tip.
TIP: XP will run on old computers - is your computer "old". Does Dell's upgrade software tell you that you can't upgrade the machine? Poppycock! If you have at 256MB of RAM in an old machine, update all your drivers, have the latest BIOS, then it should work fine. I upgraded a Dell Dimension XPS D333 with no problems. I did go and disable all the "fancy" XP features. And I installed a 133 Maxtor 80gb drive with a Promise card. It runs quite nicely. TIP: Auto/Air Adapter for Inspiron 8200 - this machine pulls 90watts. Targus does not have an adapter that provides this wattage. Dell sells Lind adapters, but not the 90w model. Dell has not tested the Lind 90w adapter, so they can't tell you that it works. However, Lind is a reputable company, and sells an adapter that will work just fine. Lind's website is found at www.lindelectronics.com. TIP: Norton Antivirus - if your 3 month subscription has expired you have several options, but don't use the subscription option that "pops up" in NAV. If you go directly to the Symantec site, you can find subscription offers for $10 or so. If you keep your eyes open, you can buy NAV for FREE after rebate from retail stores, usually with Quicken or TurboTax. Also, SystemWorks and Norton Internet Security both contain Antivirus, and are sometimes FREE after rebate. TIP: Installing Memory - is easy! Dell provides documentation on how to do it. Go to my Documentation page, and click on your machine or on the Dell User's Guides Main Page. Use my Memory page to find memory that is guaranteed to fit your machine. There's even a page for overseas delivery! Go to my SPECIAL MEMORY page to see how to go to 768mb on a Dimension R system and on an Inspiron 7000 and how to go to 1GB on a Inspiron 2600. TIP: Microsoft Office Wrong Version? - did your machine come with all the Office components you need? Or did you order Works by mistake, and really need Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, Access...? If it's within 30 days, call Dell and tell them that you made a mistake and would like to acquire the package you need for the price differential when you placed your order (only applies to OEM packages. If it's after 30 days, then you're out of luck. However, note that the price differential that Dell wants is usually more than what it would cost you to buy Office 2003 for Students and Teachers - which includes Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint. Click here for information. TIP: Traveling with your Dell? - Dell laptops are made to travel! The AC adapter can handle the higher voltage found in other countries. You might need to buy an adapter for around $5.00 to fit the wall outlet though. TIP: Promise Card Installation with new hard drive - During installation, you want go to put Windows XP on the drive. Boot to the CDROM, then follow instructions to add driver for the card after pushing F6. Hit S as instructed. Maxtor says then to "Insert your CD". Unfortunately, Windows XP wants a floppy in drive A. If you have this problem, copy the following files from the Maxtor CD to a floppy:- The entire WinXP folder, a file called Ultra, a file called Txtsetup.OEM.
